Israel Vibration: The Legendary Roots Reggae Trio That Shaped Jamaican Music

From humble beginnings in Kingston to international stages, Israel Vibration has become a benchmark for reggae harmony groups worldwide.

From Childhood Struggles to Musical Greatness

The group was formed by Lascelle “Wiss” Bulgin, Albert “Apple Gabriel” Craig, and Cecil “Skelly” Spence, who first met at the Mona Rehabilitation Clinic in Kingston, Jamaica after being affected by polio. Despite significant physical challenges, the trio discovered a shared passion for music, which became both a source of strength and a pathway to success.

Inspired by Rastafari music and philosophy, Israel Vibration combined spiritual awareness with melodic harmonies, creating a unique sound that would resonate across generations. Their early street performances and dedication to conscious reggae laid the foundation for a legendary career in roots reggae.

Breakthrough with The Same Song

In 1978, Israel Vibration released their debut album, The Same Song, marking their entry into the global reggae scene. Supported by the Twelve Tribes of Israel, a Rastafarian organization, the album’s title track became an anthem for unity, social justice, and spiritual consciousness.

This album established Israel Vibration as a leading reggae harmony trio, earning recognition alongside reggae legends such as Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. Their music stood out for its combination of melodic vocal harmonies, conscious lyrics, and traditional roots reggae rhythms.

Iconic Albums and Global Influence

Throughout their career, Israel Vibration released a series of influential albums that strengthened their reputation as one of reggae’s premier harmony groups:

  • Unconquered People (1980)
  • Why You So Craven (1981)
  • Strength of My Life (1988)
  • Praises (1990)
  • On The Rock (1995)
  • Free to Move (1996)
  • Reggae Knights (2010)

Backed by the legendary Roots Radics, the group’s music combined deep basslines with uplifting, spiritually conscious lyrics. Songs like “Why Worry,” “Rudeboy Shufflin,” and “The Same Song” remain essential recordings within Jamaican roots reggae collections worldwide.

Changes in the Original Trio

In 1997, founding member Apple Gabriel left to pursue a solo career, leaving Wiss Bulgin and Skelly Spence to continue performing. The reggae community later mourned the passing of Apple Gabriel in 2020 and Skelly Spence in 2022. Today, Wiss Bulgin continues to carry the Israel Vibration legacy forward, performing the group’s timeless music and ensuring their spiritual reggae message remains alive for new generations.

Why Israel Vibration Matters Today

Israel Vibration represents the essence of roots reggae: resilience, faith, and consciousness. Their story is a testament to how music can transform adversity into art. More than four decades after their breakthrough, their music continues to inspire and connect listeners worldwide, proving that roots reggae is more than entertainment—it’s a movement.
