Why the Twinkle Brothers Remain Relevant in Reggae News

Posted on March 12, 2026March 12, 2026 by admin

Twinkle Brothers: Legendary Roots Reggae Artists

The Twinkle Brothers are among Jamaica’s most iconic reggae bands, celebrated worldwide for their authentic roots reggae sound, spiritually conscious lyrics, and socially aware messages. With a career spanning over six decades, they have become a cornerstone of reggae music, inspiring generations with their harmonies, rhythms, and dedication to Rastafarian culture.

The Early Years

Founded in 1962 in Falmouth, Jamaica by brothers Norman and Ralston Grant, the Twinkle Brothers began creating music from a young age. With limited resources, they crafted homemade instruments from tin cans and fishing lines, demonstrating remarkable creativity and determination.

Their first single, “Somebody Please Help Me” (1966), recorded for producer Leslie Kong, quickly gained local attention. By the late 1960s, the band was performing regularly across Jamaica, developing a reputation for soulful harmonies and a compelling stage presence. These formative years laid the foundation for their signature roots reggae sound.

From Local Fame to International Recognition

Their debut album, Rasta Pon Top (1975), marked a turning point. Songs like “Give Rasta Praise” and “Beat Them Jah Jah” became anthems for reggae fans worldwide. Signing with Virgin Records’ Frontline label in the late 1970s, the band released influential albums such as Love, Praise Jah, and Countrymen.

Touring and Collaborations

After relocating to the United Kingdom in the 1980s, Norman Grant expanded the band’s reach, touring Europe and collaborating with international artists. One notable collaboration was with Polish folk group Trebunie-Tutki, blending roots reggae with traditional mountain music. This fusion showcased their versatility and global influence.

Classic Albums and Iconic Tracks

With over 60 albums released worldwide, their iconic tracks like “Jah Kingdom Come,” “Free Africa,” “Never Get Burn,” and “Since I Throw the Comb Away” remain staples in reggae playlists around the world.
